Seattle University, a nationally ranked, independent, Jesuit, Catholic institution located in one of the world's most vibrant and innovative cities, seeks an aspirational and enterprising leader to serve as the Dean of Nursing. Candidates must share a commitment to the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence and service to the greater good and to prepare equity and justice-focused nursing professionals and practitioners through exceptional undergraduate and graduate education.
The Dean of Nursing will join a dynamic and forward-looking leadership team at Seattle University led by President Eduardo Penalver, who joined the University in 2021, Provost Shane P. Martin, who is in his seventh year in his position, and current Dean of the College of Nursing Butch de Castro, who is in his second year, and will move into the role asthe Charles M. PigottDean oftheproposed College of Health Sciences (pending approval by the Seattle University Board of Trustees) with appointment of a Dean of Nursing. Reporting to Dean de Castro, the Dean of Nursing is a new position within Seattle University that will help operationalize how the portfolio of academic nursing programs and scholarly endeavors fit within the development of a College of Health Sciences and its anticipated expansion of health professions training and health sciences research.
The Dean of Nursing will be appointed as the Robert J. and Mary H. Bertch Endowed Professor in Nursing Leadership. The Dean of Nursing will provide a creative and entrepreneurial vision for nursing at Seattle University while serving as a leader internally and externally. The Dean of Nursing fosters collaboration and cultivates opportunities in service to the goals, aspirations, and operations of nursing programs that benefit and engage students, faculty, alumni, advisory board members, and community and industry partners.
The incoming Dean of Nursing at Seattle University will be an excellent communicator and a visionary leader who thrives in a collaborative, high-energy, and dynamic campus culture. They should demonstrate a nimble and creative approach to developing the university's academic nursing identity as mission-driven and patient-oriented, dedicated to providing excellent programming with a direct impact on communities in Seattle and the region. The next Dean of Nursing will be future-oriented and data-informed, analyzing trends in the health care industry and remaining attuned to the trends, needs, and demands of an ever-changing healthcare landscape.
Candidates for the Dean of Nursing should be a Registered Nurse and meet, or be able to meet, the qualifications for licensure in Washington. Additionally, they should bring a demonstrated record of progressive leadership and experience in nursing administration, education, and practice at the Department/Division Chair, Director, Associate Dean, Dean, or equivalent leadership level. Candidates with progressive careers in leadership from practice settings such as Chief Nursing Officers, Executive Directors of community care settings, and others who meet the academic degree requirements (PhD, DNP, and scholarly qualifications) will also be considered.
