ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the Assistant Dean of Clinical Skills & Simulation Education will provide innovative educational and administrative leadership to Bouve College of Health Sciences (BCHS)-operated educational spaces and technologies including: the human anatomy laboratory, skills lab classrooms and the Goldstein simulation center. This person would have the opportunity to extend leadership throughout the Northeastern University global network, including Massachusetts, North Carolina, and California campus locations among others. The position will expand the use of immersive technologies to augment and extend learning across the college network. Programs will span the continuum of skills-based lifelong learning including undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education (credit bearing and non-credit levels).

Leadership and Strategy:
  • Contribute to the formulation of BCHS strategy in experiential learning, with a focus on achieving goals in the areas of clinical skills training and simulation including the use of virtual reality platforms, interprofessional activities, and other media and technologies in health professions education.
  • Implement a framework for the BCHS experiential learning strategy to be implemented across Northeastern's global university system as appropriate.
  • Forge partnerships across sectors and institutions to advance the BCHS strategy.


Educational programs:
  • Develop unit-based faculty expertise and implement models to deliver high quality education via courses and programs in the human anatomy labs, clinical skills labs, simulation training centers, and other learning spaces throughout BCHS and across the NU global network.
  • Oversee the college-wide Standardized Patient (SP) program.
  • Assist in developing policies and procedures of relevant areas within BCHS.


Research and Funding:
  • Seek grant funding to support experiential and skills-based programming in the college and across the global network.
  • Engage in research or scholarship in area of expertise.
  • Participate in philanthropic opportunities to support the BCHS strategy.


Administrative and Personnel Management:
  • Supervise the Boston-based Director of BCHS Simulation and simulation faculty leads and staff in network campuses including Charlotte NC, Burlington MA and other sites as developed.
  • Collaborate with department chairs and unit leaders to optimize faculty and staff participation in college anatomy, simulation and skills lab spaces.
  • Manage staff by defining job expectations; planning, monitoring, and appraising performance; actively participate in employees' on-boarding, mentoring and professional development.
  • Optimize inventory management and equipment maintenance processes used across BCHS skills lab and simulation spaces.
  • Provide information and/or prepare reports as and when needed.


Teaching Expectations:
  • Teaching in the context of simulation is expected as part of this position. Additional opportunities are available based on the candidate's interest and unit affiliation.


General Operations:
  • Ensure adherence to the University's information security and The Office of Academic and Research Safety policies and procedures, and report breaches or other security safety risks accordingly.
  • Ensure coordination with other departments to facilitate the accomplishment of tasks and responsibilities, as and when needed.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS

Qualified candidates must have expertise in, or a demonstrated commitment to, working with diverse student populations and/or in a culturally diverse work and educational environment.

Education and Experience:
  • Doctoral degree in a health care discipline, education or related field or four years of experience in healthcare education.
  • Experience working with standardized patient/patient actors.
  • Experience with human cadaver lab teaching and/or management.
  • 1+ year experience working in an academic simulation lab environment or related medical/pharmacy education lab.
  • Experience using simulation and/or clinical skills tools and technologies such as Laerdal SimCapture, LLEAP, human patient simulators, medical equipment, AV equipment and/or virtual reality technologies.
  • Current certification in simulation education or willingness to obtain certification within 12 months of start date.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of applicable strategies and approaches used in contemporary health sciences skills education
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including public speaking
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, including in a leadership role, with multiple disciplines (such as PT, PA, Nursing, Speech, Counseling, Pharmacy, EMT and Public Health).
  • Ability to coordinate activities with multiple faculty, staff, and learners
  • Skill in analysis of performance data, identification of gaps, and development and implementation of quality improvement plans as they relate to skills education, simulation and the use of standardized patient actors
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical procedural concerns
